Project Scope

Overview

For my major project I’m going to utilise animation and immersive tech to simulate the experience of visiting a nature reserve. I will combine imagery of nostalgic childhood illustrations within the visuals to target a young audience as well as parents who will recognise the art style. Throughout the trail augmented reality will be used through an app to make an exciting story/narrative that the user will follow in order to help guide and keep them engaged.

Project Objectives

Children Objective:

For the target audience it is important for this reserve to be a fun immersive experience that takes on a different approach from a regular farm/zoo. The use of augmented reality may be something the child is new to so the aim would be to design a story using memorable artwork that will keep the child hooked and want to explore.

Parents Objective:

In the parents case, they’re wanting to research and find out new attractions that their child may be interested in and therefore may be drawn to this reserve due to unique USP. It can encourage their Childs enthusiasm in the outdoors as well as helping them learn about protected species all whilst becoming familiar with different technology.

Conservation Objective:

The reserves’ main objective is to maintain an enterprise that supports and protects habitats and species whilst also allowing their customers to interact with the animals in a safe manner. It can educate the visitor on the proper care that’s required for these animals to ensure they have a good quality of life

Inspiration

Woodland Trust

I’ve visited multiple nature reserve sites to see how virtual tours have been designed and created in the past. This one utilises a simple back and forth feature to traverse through the tour which I intend to use for my own to keep the narrative simple and easy to follow. There are also clean and straightforward pop-ups that follow the user along giving relevant information to what the user would be viewing. The Woodland Trust also uses sound effects in the background of their tours which I believe makes for a more immersive experience.

Yas Water World

As far as the narrative aspect of my reserve goes this idea has been used many times in the past in order to keep the visitors engaged in something that isn’t seemingly the main attraction. Yas Waterworld located in Abu Dhabi has a strong storyline that’s followed throughout the park in its architecture, rides, attractions and characters. The story that’s based on Emirati history not only intrigues the visitors but also educates them on Emirati culture.
