Composition
Composition in K-POP albums and posters
The composition and how the different design elements have been orientated on the page are important to the K-POP industry as the promotion of a new album is crucial to how well it performs in the charts. An effective composition creates a visually appealing cover which draws the viewer to the album name and release dates as well as telling the audience what type of themes and concepts will be included in the album.

Good Composition

In Itzy’s 1st album I believe the composition of the album is done well as the members and typography on the cover relates to the “Crazy” concept that the album follows. Each member is arranged in a circular formation which makes it more visually appealing, however, they are each posed differently on the cover which adds interest and allows your eyes to move from one to the next and not be bored by it. They also all have a border surrounding them which makes them look like a sticker that has been stuck on a journal/scratch book. This further emphasizes the “crazy” concept with the target audience of teenage girls that like the look of the “rebellious” album. According to Yuna (2021) “We’ll show what it’s like to be so caught up in love that you don’t know what to do with yourself” this idea of love being crazy within your head is highlighted through the scribbled typography/graphics and red-coloured members placed sporadically throughout the poster, symbolising the “wild mess” within your head

When the rule of 3rds grid is added on top of the cover it makes it clearer to see where everything is positioned. Each member fills up around the same amount of space within each of the rectangles whilst also surrounding the main title that is positioned directly in the centre. Some of the members heads also line up directly with the intersectional points/point so interest meaning our eyes will be drawn to that first and then take in the surrounding images. It is important that our eyes are drawn to the members of the group as well as the text as it allows us to recognise who the group is within a highly saturated industry where many groups are utilising the same concepts

Bad Composition

I dislike this composition as the difference in physical sizes between the members implies a sense of hierarchy between them and that some are more important/more relevant to the album than others. Because of this the eye would most likely be drawn to the largest and then make their way down to the bottom I would alter it so all the faces were the same size to show they are all equal to one another and make them look more united as a group. The differing sizes in the members could also confuse the viewers eye as it isn’t sure where to look first. Another aspect I dislike is how much the “N” in “Fancy” has been covered up by text and a member from a part of the group, possible making it harder to read for people who haven’t heard of it and don’t know what it’s called. To make room for the “N” so it can be seen more clearly I would move the group so it’s off-centre and arrange the “YOU” to the right of them to utilise the negative space. As well as this the release date and “27th Mini Album” text is very small in the corner and hard to read with the swirly background beneath it so I would enlarge it to make it easier for fans to see when it’d be released.

To improve the composition in this promotion poster I started by resizing the members of the group to show there isn’t any hierarchy between them and they all equally contribute to the album. I also re-positioned the “YOU” sticker/graphic to avoid covering the main title as well as enlarging the point size of the release date and “The 27th Mini Album” text.
